Park Güell is one of the most emblematic places in the city of Barcelona. A large green space where you can find interesting architectural elements that show the importance of Catalan modernism. With an area of 19 hectares, it is located between the neighbourhoods of Coll, la Salut, Vallcarca i els Penitents, Carmel and Can Baró in the districts of Gràcia and Horta-Guinardó.

One of the main characteristics of Park Güell is that it is located in the middle of the city in the middle of densely populated urban areas. For this reason, it fulfills a double function as a place of leisure and culture as well as a green space that improves the environmental quality of its surroundings.

Of course, its artistic historical value is incalculable. The construction of the park began in 1900 at the height of the expansion of the city of Barcelona. It is one of Gaudí’s most important and well-known works, which was commissioned by the businessman and aristocrat Eusebi Güell to carry out this project.

One of its most characteristic elements is what is known as the trencadís style, which stands out for its colourful mosaics created from broken tiles.

The restoration of Park Güell

Throughout the more than 100 years history of Park Güell, 9 million people have visited this great green space every year. That is why it is not surprising that has suffered a deterioration, making it necessary to carry out restoration works.

For this ambitious project, ADEX was involved, one of the companies with the longest tradition in the manufacture of tiles in Spain. For more than 120 years and over five generations, it has offered a quality product that adapts perfectly to the needs of the restoration of Park Güell.

To carry out this project it was necessary to have a producer capable of making the most faithful reproductions of the tiles used in this emblematic space in Barcelona. That is why ADEX was chosen to undertake this duty, since it has experts who have in-depth knowledge of the artisanal tile production processes and was the only Spanish factory capable of addressing this challenge.

The ambitious project involved the complete restoration of the Hypostyle Hall of the Park, as well as the columns that support it, and also the perimeter bench that surrounds the roof of the Park. All of this entailed the destruction of an important part of the trencadís designed by Gaudí for the decoration of this areas. And for this reason ADEX had to carry out a meticulous job of faithfully reproduction of this original tile, manufacturing up to fifty different shades of white and also hand- painting a multitude of different designs that maintained the originality of Gaudí’s trencadís.

ADEX’s participation in the restoration of a space like Park Güell is one of the most important works carried out by the company. The result is visible with high quality tiles fully integrated into this famous monument.

ADEX has managed to carve out an excellent reputation in the international market and has received numerous awards that recognize the work of this leading company in the tile sector.
